Salt makes everything taste better, but excessive consumption of salt may have a destructive effect on your overall health. Food production companies spend billions in making you come back for more. It’s salt that gives them the power to control your taste buds. Unfortunately. Salt keeps you addicted, sick and prone to diseases.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), you’re only allowed to eat between 1,500 to 2,400 mg of salt each day. Statistics shows that people in America consume an average of 3,400 mg each day, and the greatest portion comes from processed food.
This increases the risk of developing a health problem. Processed foods lack nutrients, and give us tons of calories and salt. You don’t want that, right?
A study released in The New England Journal of Medicine confirms that 1.65 million deaths in the world are connected to excessive sodium consumption. About 10% of heart-related death cases in the US are caused by sodium. You can’t die from too much salt, but it sure increases the risk of developing a serious health problem.
In this article we’ll focus on the consequences of excessive consumption of salt, and hopefully, you’ll limit your intake of salt.
What happens when you consume too much salt?
- Kidney problems
Sodium increases the risk of forming kidney stones as it increases the levels of calcium in urine. This is the key factor in the formation of stones. If you eat too much salt, the body retains more water in order to dilute it. Human body is designed to remove excess fluid by filtering blood through kidneys.
But, your kidneys eliminate less water if you eat too much salt, and your blood pressure jumps high. This leads to kidney failure. Your blood pressure rises as the body deals with the excess sodium, and applies an awful strain on the arteries leading to your kidneys.
- High blood pressure
Salt increases the risk of hypertension. Sodium makes your body retain more water, and the heart can’t pump blood normally. This adds more strain and pressure on the organs, leading to heart disease, stroke, dementia, cardiovascular disease, and other health problems.
Excessive consumption of sodium turns your body into water-retaining mode. Bloating doesn’t occur in your abdomen only. Sodium can make your body retain water in other parts, too.
Experts say that you may have swellings in your feet, legs and hands. This happens only if you eat too much salt too all the time. The problem doesn’t occur overnight. It develops over time, and high-sodium diet often leads to chronic bloating.
- Brain fog
Excess salt causes cognitive impairment. According to a study published in an 2011 edition of Neurobiology of Aging, older people who consume too much salt and sit for too long experience serious cognitive decline.
Brain fog indicates inflammation, and can be caused by salt. If you eat salt and don’t drink water, you’re likely to deal with severe cognitive disturbances.
Human body loses calcium through urine, meaning that high sodium intake leads to severe loss of calcium. Insufficient calcium levels in blood make the body draw it out of your bones, which eventually leads to osteoporosis.
Limit your intake of salt
- Avoid processed foods and take out. These are packed with salt and lack nutrients
- Boost your potassium intake, as it counteracts the effect of sodium, and lowers blood pressure. Take 3,500-4,700 mg per day. Potassium is found in bananas, sweet potatoes, spinach, avocados and tomatoes.
- Prepare your meals at home, and use salt-free seasonings. Go to your local grocery salt, and look for seasonings that don’t contain salt at all
- Eat fruits, veggies and meat. Limit your consumption of salt-packed canned products. If you still decide to eat canned food, look for salt-free products.
